An unforgettable exchange full of emotion! DFG-LFA Saarbrücken – Bilbao Txorierri Instituto

From 11 to 18 March, our school devoted itself to Basque culture as our exchange students from Bilbao were visiting: music, sightseeing and new discoveries.

From practising Baroque dance steps in the school’s multi-purpose hall to a joint performance of the Boléro in our music room, we enjoyed some wonderful moments, particularly during an unforgettable day in Strasbourg with Mr Suska and Ms Kusmirek.

The programme included a train journey to explore the Alsatian city, including ‘Petite France’ and the cathedral. We passed the Arte studios, had some free time in the city and explored the European Parliament. We even tried traditional dishes such as tarte flambée.

The next day, a visit to Trier was on the agenda – unfortunately in the rain! Afterwards, we all met up in Saarbrücken and had currywurst, pizza and rigatoni together, and some of the Basques tried the sausage but didn’t like it.

On the last day, we went for a walk along the Saar in the sunshine – hooray! – and visited Saarbrücken, the St. Johanner Markt and the castle with its panoramic view of the Saar, and all the young people sat together by the Staden in the sunshine until it was time to say goodbye on 18 March. But that was only a temporary parting, as we would see them again!

On 18 April, the time had finally come: our trip to Bilbao was just around the corner. But we hadn’t reckoned on the strikes at Lufthansa! Despite a two-day delay, we were absolutely buzzing with anticipation – for me, it was my first ever flight. Upon arrival in Bilbao, the excitement gave way to wonder.

Right from the first weekend, we immersed ourselves fully in family life. We headed to the coast to explore Gaztelugatxe, a spectacular seaside spot famous as a filming location for the series ‘Game of Thrones’. Afterwards, we visited the charming fishing harbour of Bermeo, where we enjoyed our first rabas (deep-fried squid) on a terrace. A real treat!

On Monday, we got to know our partner school in Derio. It’s fair to say that the daily routine of a Basque pupil is nothing like ours! Lessons don’t start until 8.30 am and often finish as early as 2.30 pm, or 3.30 pm at the latest! However, lunch isn’t served until 3.00 pm. It’s a routine that’s tiring at first, but you get used to it quite quickly. During the only long break, which lasts an hour, pupils are allowed to leave the school grounds to go to the shops.

There is a more relaxed atmosphere for discussion in class; you don’t necessarily have to put your hand up to speak, and the lessons are livelier. As for the facilities, the school has unisex toilets and a fully equipped laboratory, in addition to the standard chemistry lab.

Accompanied by our teachers, we explored Bilbao in depth. We marvelled at the famous red steel suspension bridge, the Puente de la Salve, walked along the River Nervión and the Ría de Bilbao, and visited the Guggenheim Museum, in front of which ‘Puppy’ – a giant dog entirely covered in flowers – stands guard; the flowers are replaced regularly.

To explore the city’s history in its entirety, we took the famous funicular railway. Bilbao, nestled amongst the hills, unfolded before us in a spectacular panorama: the surrounding mountains, the Athletic Club Bilbao football stadium, the Guggenheim Museum and the River Nervión.

It’s impossible to leave without mentioning the local cuisine. We tucked into tortillas, pintxos and delicious croquettes. I even tried to learn a few words of Basque, but the language is a real challenge!

We’ll remember this trip as an incredible human and cultural experience. A huge thank you to everyone who made this exchange possible.

Orchestra trip to Buc: A wonderful experience

After almost a year of rehearsals, the time had finally come: the orchestra trip to Buc could go ahead. Near Versailles, pupils from the DFG-LFA in Buc, Saarbrücken, Freiburg and Strasbourg came together to rehearse intensively together for the first time over a period of three days. The result of their hard work was showcased in a final concert at the renowned ‘Académie équestre du Château de Versailles’. A multicultural and varied programme entitled ‘Crépuscules’ was presented to the public. For the first time, the orchestra was supported by the large choir of the DFG-LFA Buc, conducted by Mr Courseaux and Ms Peyre.

This project was founded five years ago by Mr Courseaux and Mr Chen (DFG-LFA Buc) and Ms Choi and Ms Kusmirek (DFG-LFA Saarbrücken). Since then, the DFG-LFA in Freiburg and Strasbourg have also joined the project, in the hope of involving the DFG-LFA in Hamburg as well, although this has unfortunately not yet been possible this year. This year, the orchestra and choir were conducted by five teachers: Mr Courseaux, Mr Chen and Ms Peyre from Buc, as well as Ms Kusmirek and Ms Choi from Saarbrücken. Mme Giret from Saarbrücken provided us with invaluable support in organising the trip. For the DFG-LFA Saarbrücken orchestra, this trip was also a special occasion: it was the last joint orchestra trip with Ms Kusmirek and Ms Choi, as both will be leaving the school for a year in the coming academic year. We very much hope that in 2028 we will be able to make music together again with our two wonderful teachers and organise a new concert!

Quiz night DFG-LFA: An evening when boundaries disappear … and your brain cells are working overtime!

Söder’s meat fetish, Pope Leo XIV, the Dutch national anthem, the Village People, a cheese that reaches 113 km/h*…

These are just some of the topics that really put the participants of the 4th DFG-LFA Quiz Night on Friday 19 June 2026 through their paces. Whether with family, friends or even on their own to meet new people, around forty quiz enthusiasts came together for a festive get-together.

As usual, the café-restaurant “Côté Canal” in Grosbliderstroff sponsored some of the prizes. We are always particularly delighted by this collaboration, as part of the founding team behind this venue are alumni of our school and have made it their mission to embody Franco-German friendship.

The school association ALFA has once again provided the brave participants with food and drink. A big thank you to them once again!

How about taking part next year? We look forward to putting your knowledge to the test in a few months’ time in a fun atmosphere!

Just before the holidays, the winning class in the English debate competition was presented with some well-deserved prizes: each pupil received a cinema ticket donated by our Parents’ Association, Alfa, which we would like to thank once again warmly for their unfailing support!

Well done to Class 2nde 5 and their teacher, and happy holidays to everyone – perhaps with a good film on the big screen to round them off?

Breaking down barriers, experiencing Europe! Pupils in Class 1ES are taking part in workshops on cross-border mobility

The Year 11 ES pupils at the Franco-German High School, accompanied by their economics and social sciences teacher, Ms Corinne Becker, had the opportunity to take part in workshops on the themes of cross-border mobility and Europe in everyday life. Organised by Ms Caste-Kersten of the Asko Europa Stiftung foundation, the workshops were led by Ines Namane and Elisa-Sophie Biewer, former pupils of our school. They were very committed and shared their experiences; with their enthusiasm, they truly sparked our pupils’ curiosity by showing them the opportunities offered by cross-border mobility.

Launched in 2015 in partnership with EURES and the Saarland Federal Employment Agency, this project – ‘Overcoming borders, experiencing Europe!’ – aims to raise awareness amongst young people in the border region of the many opportunities offered by cross-border mobility in the Greater Region. This project forms part of a Franco-German initiative designed to help them discover the benefits of the cross-border labour market, as well as the practical advantages it offers: access to binational training programmes, a variety of jobs, and cultural enrichment.

We would like to extend our warmest thanks to Ms Caste-Kersten and her ambassadors for their commitment.

1ère students bravely defying the heatwave in Brussels

From Sunday 21st to Friday 26th June 2026, seven of our teachers accompanied 101 Première students on an exciting five-day trip to Brussels. Packed with EU-focused activities, the programme gave students the opportunity to experience first-hand how the European Union works and to explore its institutions in greater depth.

During our stay, we visited the EU Parliament and the Parlamentarium, the European Economic and Social Committee, the European Commission’s interactive exhibition Experience Europe, and the House of European History. Each visit offered a different perspective on European cooperation, democracy and policymaking.

One day was dedicated to the theme of human rights. Following an inspiring presentation by Marian Blondeel from United Nations, students joined Jean-Philippe Theyskens from the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium for a fascinating introduction to paintings depicting human rights violations. They were then able to explore the artworks in the museum themselves and reflect on the powerful stories they tell.

Throughout the week, students also completed a variety of fun and engaging challenges. These ranged from identifying Brussels’ iconic architecture—such as the magnificent guildhalls around the Grand-Place and comparing Art Nouveau with Neoclassical styles—to spotting as many embassies as possible, keeping an eye out for diplomatic number plates (without photographing them, of course!), counting VIP motorcades, and discovering all sorts of sights and details that you simply don’t come across in our little corner of the world.

On our final day, with the heatwave reaching its peak, we still managed to admire some of Brussels’ famous comic-strip murals. However, we decided to give the Atomium a miss—it would have felt less like sightseeing and more like climbing around inside an oven!

Heatwave or not, the week was packed with discoveries, new perspectives and experiences that will stay with our students long after they left Brussels.

Career guidance for Year 10 pupils at the Chamber of Crafts

Career guidance is an important step on the path to the future. For just under 80 pupils in Year 10 of our school, the two-day visit to the Chamber of Crafts (22 June to 25 June 2026) offered the opportunity to learn about the wide range of apprenticeship trades and to discover their own interests and abilities.

During the event, the young people gained an insight into various career fields – ranging from metalwork and electrical engineering to hairdressing and beauty therapy, baking and confectionery, and optometry. In hands-on workshops, they were able to try out typical work tasks for themselves and experience just how varied and innovative modern skilled trades are. Discussions with the training advisers also provided authentic insights into everyday working life and answered questions about apprenticeships, career opportunities and further training.

The career guidance service at the Chamber of Crafts helps students make informed decisions about their future education and career paths. It highlights the prospects offered by an apprenticeship and the wide range of development opportunities available in the skilled trades – right up to master craftsman qualification or running their own business.

The aim of the event is to support young people at an early stage in their career choices, to nurture their talents and to show them new prospects for the future. In this way, career guidance becomes a valuable experience that combines theory and practice and opens their eyes to the many opportunities available in the skilled trades.

Film seminar on “Hitlerjunge Quex” at the Filmhaus Saarbrücken

At the Filmhaus Saarbrücken, students from classes 9S2, 2.6, 1S2 and 1S3, organised by Ms Beitelstein and Ms Thomé, took part in a cinema seminar on the Nazi propaganda film “Hitlerjunge Quex” (1933). The aim of the event was to analyse the film not as entertainment but as a historical document, and to critically examine the mechanisms of Nazi propaganda.

Following an introduction to the historical context of the Nazi era by the former director of the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung (Centre for Political Education), Dr Burkhard Jellonek, the group watched the film together. In the seminar that followed, the participants engaged in an in-depth examination of the film’s origins, its visual language and its cinematic techniques. It became clear how the direction, music, camerawork and characterisation were deliberately employed to convey the ideology of the Nazi regime and, in particular, to influence young people.

Particular emphasis was placed on the question of how propaganda works and why it plays such a central role, particularly in authoritarian systems. The pupils discussed how emotions are stirred up, enemy stereotypes are created and political messages are conveyed through cinematic techniques. At the same time, they explored why critical media literacy remains of great importance today.

The cinema seminar offered the young people the opportunity to experience history in a vivid way and to critically analyse historical sources. The combination of film education and historical and political education fostered an understanding of how propaganda works and strengthened their ability to evaluate media content critically.

The event at the Filmhaus Saarbrücken highlighted that engaging with historical propaganda films makes an important contribution to democracy education. It encouraged participants to recognise manipulation strategies, critically evaluate historical developments and reflect on the significance of democratic values for the present day.
