“Security cameras are an invasion of our privacy”, “Digital books are better than paper books” or “Money can buy happiness”… those were the controversial issues that opposed the debaters. It was hard to decide which teams were the best and the distribution of points showed how close it was.

However, the 2nde S2 and the 2nde L1 were the ones to make it through to the final round on 2nd May. Here the motion for the two remaining teams was “Students should do mandatory community service”, the students of 2L1 taking the affirmative stance against the opposing team of 2 nde S2. They were vying for a cup, a title and the possibility to offer each of their classmates a free cinema ticket.

In the end, Rebecca Wilhelm, Johann Schmitz und Max Thewes of 2nde L1 accomplished their task slightly better than the equally talented opponents of 2nde S2.

Well done to all the participants whose language level and debating skills were particularly high, and above all well done to the winning team of 2nde L1! Thanks to the lively audience who supported the teams throughout the three debates, and brought in good mood and fine spirit.

Indeed the 2nde ES team, made of Alina D’Almeida, Cedric Henke and Carolina Köhler Estrada, gave them a hard time with arguments ranging from scientific evidence of successful matchmaking to the importance of common interests in relationships.

Carrie Ankerstein from the University of Saarland, Agnes Scholtes from the Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut and our very own M. Grannec, spent a few minutes pondering their decision, but the trophee ended up in the proud hands of the three talented young ladies.

Well done to both teams who performed extremely well. Many thanks to the competent and dedicated jury members, as well as to Alfa for sponsoring the prize.

And a challenging task it was, when faced with talented opponents. Indeed the 2nde S2 team, made of Daniel Becher, Simon Dima and Maximilian Sänger, gave them a hard time with arguments ranging from freedom of speech to the lack of efficiency of such a measure.

Carrie Ankerstein from the University of Saarland, Agnes Scholtes from the Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut and our very own M. Grannec, spent a few minutes pondering their decision, but the trophee ended up in the proud hands of the three talented young ladies.

Well done to both teams who performed extremely well. Many thanks to the competent and dedicated jury members, as well as to Alfa for sponsoring the prize. The fifth anniversary of this event turned out to be real success thanks to all those involved, including the supporting colleagues and classmates.

Der Beitrag DFG-LFA Debating contest 2017 erschien zuerst auf Lycée Franco-Allemand de Sarrebruck.

L’édition 2014-2015 du concours de débat s’est achevée au mois d’avril avec succés. Encore une fois, les enseignants concernés et leurs classes ont fait preuve de beaucoup d’investissement et de motivation. Le jury était composé de Mme Gerhardt, professeur à l’université de la Sarre, de Mme Scholtes, qui représentait le Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut, et de M. Grannec, professeur au LFA.

La finale a opposé les classes de 2S3 (Hortense Jouin-Genton, Anton Linemann et Marleen Roscheck) et de 2L2 (Viviane Deesz, Lena Feld et Noha Klose). Le jury a admis avoir eu beaucoup de mal à départager les 2 équipes, mais la conclusion a fait la différence, et a permis à l’équipe de 2L2 de remporter cette année la victoire. Bravo à eux, mais encore et surtout bravo et merci à tous les élèves qui ont participé activement à cet événement, à leurs professeurs, au jury, et à l’amicale Alfa, qui encore une fois finance le prix de ce concours. La classe de 2L2 ira donc assister à une projection privée d’un film en anglais au cinéma Filmhaus.

Rendez-vous l’année prochaine pour fêter les 5 ans de cette aventure linguistique et humaine enrichissante!

“Zoos should be banned” was the motion that the teams had to discuss. Not an easy topic but a thought-provoking one, at least. They were vying for a cup, a title and the possibility to offer each of their classmates a free cinema ticket.

Well done to all the participants and thanks again to all those who contribute to making this event an exciting moment of language learning by doing!

The qualifiers took place on 1st April and opposed 6 teams of 2nde students. The 2L2 and the 2ES teams have made it to the finals, after winning their debates which revolved around beauty contests that should be banned and interactions between students and teachers on networking sites.

We were lucky enough, once more, to count on a very professional and dedicated jury, made up of Dr Gerhardt from the University of Saarland, Frau Scholtes from the Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut and our very own Frau Carmen Becker and Jessica Schuhmacher, our New-Zealand assistant.

The audience was very vocal and the students showed great support to their teams. As for the debaters, they gave their best and managed to impress M. Schneider, our new French teacher who used to teach in an English international school, and is therefore used to attending debating contests. He declared that our students made a very favourable impression upon him.

Well done to everybody involved in the contest: jury members, debaters, timekeepers, caretakers, Heads and last but not least to the colleagues who help with and support this initiative. The best of luck to the finalists who will have to hone their skills to try and win the contest on 30th April!

Der Beitrag Third edition of English debating contest erschien zuerst auf Lycée Franco-Allemand de Sarrebruck.

Le premier tour du concours a eu lieu le 15 mars et a opposé les participants autour de sujets aussi divers que l’interdiction de la cigarette dans les lieux publics ou les quotas de femmes en politique. Le choix fut assez difficile, selon les membres du jury, mais les deux classes qualifiées pour participer à la finale furent celles de 2L1 et de 2S2.

Ce dernier tour s’est tenu le 18 avril. Le thème retenu était la légalisation ou non de l’euthanasie : sujet complexe mais qui n’a pas découragé les participants pour autant. A l’issue d’une discussion poussée, les jurés ont finalement choisi de récompenser la classe de M. Grannec (2S2).

Bravo à tous les participants dont l’implication a été exemplaire, ainsi qu’au public dont le soutien n’a pas failli ! Un très grand merci aux membres du jury (Dr. Cornelia Gerhardt, Universität des Saarlandes – Frau Scholtes, Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut – Frau Kanning et Herr Behet, professeurs d’anglais du LFA). Il faut encore saluer Alfa : sans le soutien de l’amicale, nous ne pourrions pas organiser cet événement, ni récompenser les vainqueurs (une place de cinéma pour chacun des élèves de la classe de 2S2).

Der Beitrag 2ème édition du concours de débat en anglais erschien zuerst auf Lycée Franco-Allemand de Sarrebruck.

Les 6 équipes se sont donc rencontrées une première fois en avril pour trois débats éliminatoires autour du thème commun de la famille. Le jury, composé de Brad Fansher (assistant américain au LFA), du Dr. Cornelia Gerhardt (professeure à l’université de la Sarre), de Mme Thomé (professeure au LFA) et d’un élève de Terminale, a choisi les équipes de 2S1 et de 2S3 pour aller en finale.

Les deux équipes finalistes se sont investies avec ardeur dans le dernier débat mais les 2S1 ont finalement remporté la coupe récompensant les meilleurs débateurs en anglais du LFA pour l’année scolaire 2011-2012. Ils ont, par là même, permis à toute leur classe de gagner des places de cinéma gratuites.

Bravo à tous les participants qui ont démontré de bonnes qualités linguistiques ainsi que d’intéressantes capacités d’argumentation. Bravo tout particulièrement aux vainqueurs: Anna-Katharina Braun, Nils Haenisch et Lukas Steffen.

Bonnes vacances à tous et rendez-vous l’année prochaine pour la seconde édition de ce concours de débat!
