Discovery Day: Welcoming New Friends

The week kicked off with a Discovery Day. Students were greeted by our headmasters, before engaging in ice-breaking activities designed to foster connections among students. The day continued with a city rally through Saarbrücken that encouraged teamwork and exploration.

A Day in Strasbourg: European Parliament Visit

On the second day, students embarked on an exciting journey to Strasbourg. The highlight was a visit to the European Parliament, where students learned about the workings of European governance. After a lunch break in the city, participants had free time to explore Strasbourg’s picturesque streets and rich history, deepening their understanding of European culture.

Project work: (M)EatLess 

Wednesday began with an introduction to the issue of dietary choices and carbon emissions, followed by interviews conducted by students in the centre of Saarbrücken and at the university. In the afternoon, students collaborated to select their best interviews and write reports. The day concluded with a tasting session of various vegan products, promoting awareness of dietary choices.

Discovering Trier: A Journey Through History

The fourth day took students to Trier, one of Germany’s oldest cities. After a guided tour that showcased Trier’s historical landmarks, students enjoyed free time to explore the city further. This experience allowed participants to immerse themselves in the local culture, enriching their understanding of German heritage.

Food here, food there: a comparison of supermarket food

The final day of the program was dedicated to exploring differences between supermarkets in Germany, Croatia, Portugal and Spain. Students visited local supermarkets to compare products and gather insights on food sourcing practices. They returned to school to prepare presentations, sharing their findings with peers.

The week concluded with a heartfelt goodbye event at a bowling arena, where students celebrated their shared experiences and newfound friendships.

A Week to Remember

This Erasmus+ exchange week was a testament to the power of cultural exchange and collaboration. Students not only expanded their horizons and improved their English skills but also formed lasting connections that will continue beyond this week!

Nous y avons rencontré d’autres Lycéens avec la ferme intention de vivre de nouvelles amitiés afin de renforcer la volonté de paix en Europe: Lycée David d’Angers (France), l’IES Francisco de Los Rios di Córdoba (Espagne), l’AHS de Bruck an der Mur (Autriche).

Les Italiens seront présents dans notre Lycée en mai prochain.

The students received a warm welcome from their Portuguese exchange partners. Activities on the theme of food and nutrition included a visit to the chocolate museum in Porto, a visit to the University of Agronomy in Coimbra, where they watched butter and cheese being made, and workshops on veganism and nutrition and mental health. It was a unique experience that allowed our students to immerse themselves in an unforgettable multicultural world and to make progress in English and Spanish.

Dans le cadre du programme Erasmus « Food », Marine Cop-Reeb (1es), Elisa Fabre (1S1), Olivia Fierling (1L1), Camille Gaspari (1S1) Manon Grausem (1S3), Nuala Mairel (1L1), Lara Riehl (1es), Ezeckielle N’Diaye (1L1) et Lucie Vittet (1S3) accompagnées de leurs professeures Gemma Bermejo et Corinne Becker ont eu la chance de participer à un programme d’échange avec le lycée Agrupamento de Escolas Dr. Mário Sacramento à Aveiro, Portugal du 8 au 15 décembre 2024 où elles ont retrouvé leurs partenaires croates et espagnols des lycées Gimnazija Lucijana Vranjanina de Zagreb et du Colegio Zola de Las Rosas, Madrid.

Les élèves ont été chaleureusement accueillies par leurs correspondants portugais. Les activités sur le thème de la nourriture et l’alimentation comprenaient en autre la visite du musée du chocolat de Porto, la visite de l’université d’agronomie de Coimbra où elles ont assisté à la production de beurre et de fromage et la participation à les ateliers de sensibilisation au véganisme et sur le thème de la nutrition et la santé mentale. Cette expérience a été unique et a permis à nos élèves de s’immerger dans un univers multiculturel inoubliable et de faire des progrès en anglais et en espagnol.

Based on the project theme, which revolves around nutrition and food, the participants analysed differences between supermarkets in different countries and visited an Alsatian pretzel factory. The programme also included practical work on the topic of food: under the guidance of pupils and teachers from the Technisch-Gewerbliches Berufsbildungszentrum 2, a vocational school in Saarbrücken, the students were able to prepare their own food in their commercial kitchen and bakery.

Our guests also got to know our border region, for example during a city rally through Saarbrücken, a visit to Strasbourg and a guided tour of the city of Trier. The town of Saarbrücken also opened its doors to officially welcome our European partners.

An eventful week with plenty of opportunities for exciting encounters and cultural exchange, both for our European guests and for us as hosts. Goodbye and see you soon in Aveiro (Portugal) and Madrid (Spain)!

Après une visite à Zagreb sous la neige en début d’année, nous avons rencontré nos partenaires Erasmus+ de Croatie, du Portugal et d’Espagne à Sarrebruck dans la semaine du 15 au 19 avril.

Sur la base du thème du projet, qui tourne autour de la nutrition et de l’alimentation, les participants ont analysé les différences entre les supermarchés de différents pays et ont visité une fabrique de bretzels alsacienne. Le programme comprenait également des travaux pratiques sur le thème de l’alimentation : sous la direction d’élèves et d’enseignants du Technisch-Gewerbliches Berufsbildungszentrum 2, une école professionnelle de Sarrebruck, les étudiants ont pu préparer leurs propres aliments dans leur propre repas dans leur cuisine professionnelle et leur boulangerie.

Nos invités ont également appris à connaître notre région frontalière, par exemple lors d’un rallye urbain à Sarrebruck, d’une visite à Strasbourg et d’une visite guidée de la ville de Trèves. La mairie de Sarrebruck nous a aussi ouvert ses portes pour nous souhaiter officiellement la bienvenue.

Une semaine riche en événements et en occasions de rencontres passionnantes et d’échanges culturels, tant pour nos hôtes européens que pour nous-mêmes. Au revoir et à bientôt à Aveiro (Portugal) et à Madrid (Espagne) !

Pour notre fille, l’échange a été une expérience merveilleuse et très précieuse. Les échanges sont toujours importants et le sont encore plus après les longues années Corona. Heureusement, notre fille s’est très bien entendue avec sa correspondante et sa famille. Mon mari et moi sommes très heureux et reconnaissants que l’échange ait eu lieu et que vous ayez si bien accompagné les élèves.

June 2023 was the first time since 2017 that our 1ère pupils were offered an educational trip. This year’s attractive destinations were Brussels, Amsterdam and The Hague, each of which were visited by a group of around 30. The pupils discovered the cities from various perspectives, learning about their historical as well as current importance. The working language throughout was English and everybody was actively involved in the documenting of the trips. Let’s see what their impressions were!

Brussels

13h47 we left the school.

Then figuring out the rooms.

We stopped at a station at 16h and one was missing, so we were delayed. We arrived at 18h45.

We were all hungry and wanted to eat as soon as possible. So we went, and we were all happy. Then we all went to bed.

Report of the First Day in Brussels, on 26th June 2023

Our first day in Brussels began after a hot and humid night in the hostel.
Our “task of the day” was to explore and capture moments related to the Belgian monarchy. We started by departing for the European Parliament at 8:40 am and arrived there around 9:20 am. The check-in process at the parliament was like that of an airport.

We had a guided tour in German, and our first stop was the main room, which featured a magnificent sculpture from Belgium. Additionally, there was a painting representing each of the other countries. We delved into various topics during our tour, starting with a discussion on the President of the European Parliament, followed by European Elections and European Politics.
We learned about the structure of the European Union, with the European Commission, the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament. In the Plenary Chamber, we explored the diversity of languages and the challenges faced by translators, particularly with the German language. Two interesting facts stood out: despite the difficulties, 97% of MEP speeches are translated accurately, and due to the demanding nature of their work, translators can only work for 15 minutes before needing a break.
Our tour concluded at 11:25 am, and we had a lunch break from 11:45 am to 12:45 pm. Afterward, we visited the House of European History, where we were captivated by an exciting exhibition showcasing significant periods and moments in European history, including World War I and II.

Then the group engaged in a Parlamentarium role-play game, assuming the roles of MEPs from different political parties. We were tasked with finding a compromise to reduce water consumption and waste, as well as proposing a realistic plan for introducing chip implants. After intense discussions and negotiations, we decided to allocate 150 million euros for infrastructure improvements, research investments, and a public awareness campaign. As for the chip implants, the compromise was that they could be used for health, commercial, and security purposes, with individuals having the freedom to decide for themselves, while children required parental consent.

Finally, we had the opportunity to visit the Parlamentarium, an exhibition that delved into European relations and included the topic of Brexit. A fortunate few also had a spontaneous meeting with a Member of the European Parliament (MEP).

We concluded the day by returning to the Youth Hostel of Jacques Brel, reflecting on the enriching experiences and insights gained during our time at the European Parliament in Brussels.

Last day :

We had lunch at 7h30 and our meeting at 9h00.
We left the hostel at 9h and went to the Botanical Garden to wait for the bus.
The bus was late due to an accident and traffic jam.

The bus arrived at 10h54!!!
We all put our luggage in the bus and went inside.
We were a bit tired and slept all the way, but we woke up as soon as we had a break.

We had a break at 12h30.

And we finally arrived back home at 16h20.

The Hague

We thought it would be an interesting idea to film a vlog. It gave us the possibility to rewatch the highlights of the week in The  Hague such as going to the beach, visiting the peace palace and the museums, cycling to Delft and playing „beret“ and card games.

Why would you like to go on a trip? The typical answer to this question contains generally two different ideas: firstly, many people would reply that they want to discover something new and secondly, they would add that they want to escape a few days from the monotony of their everyday life. Therefore, travelling seems to appeal to us in two different ways: on one hand, we see in it the opportunity of interaction with the unknown and on the other hand, we want to take care of ourselves by finding our intimacy outside of our habitual bubble.

The coexistence of those two essential elements is what made our trip to The Hague a particular experience. First of all, we had the opportunity to explore a new country with a fairly special language and culture. We discovered its landscapes and its art and got a good insight into the particularities of the city of The Hague and its environment, our hunger of unknown was thus satisfied.

But what characterises the unknown? When we speak of the phenomenon of novelty we actually mean a very short moment: the first contact with the unknown. The contemplation of it is accompanied by a process of acknowledgment: after a short period of time the unknown becomes known and integrates itself in our big pool of memories and knowledge.

This is exactly how it was in The Hague: after a day, the language that earlier seemed so strange became normal, and after two days it was already familiar and so on. This process of becoming intimate with the unknown is what fosters the earlier described “new intimacy” that we are looking for when travelling and that permits us to take a deep breath of variety outside of our normal context.

All in all, The Hague for me was the symbiosis between those two elements that constitute a good excursion and that is what made this class trip so special!

26.06.23: On Monday we left Saarbrücken in bus at approximately 7:30 AM. We arrived in The Hague in the middle of the afternoon. As we arrived at the hostel we got to go in our room and start to unpack, we had a free time before dinner and we took this opportunity to start visiting the city. We came back for dinner and, because we had free time after dinner too, went back in the city where we found a place to listen to music and talk together in front of the Parliament.

27.06.23: On the next day we learned a few things about The Hague, thanks to a few students who gave us a guided tour. We saw a few important monuments of The Hague including the Parliament and the Peace Palace. After that we all went to the beach where we ate and played together in order to break the ice. We then walked a little and arrived at the top of a hill where we had a panorama view of the beach and on a part of the city

28.06.23: On Wednesday we started our day with a free time, we didn’t do anything in that time because i think we were starting to be a little bit tired. We met at noon in front of the Peace Palace where we visited the visitor center. We then went to the Mauritshuis museum were we saw Girl with a Pearl Earring. we then went back to the hostel to eat and them went to the Zeehelden festival.

29.06.24: The next day we went to Delft, a little city near The Hague, by bike. There we had a free time which gave us the opportunity to visit the city. We all met at 2 o’clock in front of the Vermeer Museum to visit. After the visit we went back to The Hague by bike. After dinner we kept the bike and during our free time we did a small tour of the city.

30.06.23: On Friday we went to the beach by tramway. We then did a hike and them went back to the beach. Once again we played together and a few of us went swimming. When we got back to the hostel I think most of us were a bit tired so we napped and them got ready before dinner to go out during free time.

01.06.23: On Saturday we left The Hague to go back to Saarbrücken. We arrived in the afternoon.

Visit to the Mauritshuis museum in Den Haag (Sebastian, 1S2)

On the second day of our stay in Den Haag we went to the renowned Mauritshuis museum, home to many Dutch masterpieces. Our teachers had booked the guided tour, which allowed us to fully appreciate the selection of tantalizing works of art.

The tour started with a brief overview of Maurice’s biography, which helped us understand how the art collection came to be. The tour guide explained that the Mauritshuis was originally built between 1636-1641 as a private residence for Count John Maurice of Nassau, therefore the name Mauritshuis (“huis” meaning house in Dutch). It was only later transformed into an art museum, which opened to the public in 1822. Count John Maurice of Naussau was a very wealthy man and a passionate art collector. He acquired a great selection of paintings, mainly from the Dutch Golden Age era. His collection includes pieces by the grandmasters Vermeer, Rembrandt and Hals, which form the core of the museum’s collection.

The highlight of the tour was without a doubt the world famous masterpiece: “Girl with a Pearl Earring” (1665) by Vermeer. The tour guide explained that, although this was such a renowned painting, it is to this day unknown who the girl represents and who was used as a model. Art historians believe the girl may not represent a particular person at all, but instead is meant to showcase what Dutch girls looked like at the time. The tour guide also explained the lighting technique used for the centerpiece of the painting, the pearl. Vermeer never actually drew a pearl, the portrayer only imagines a pearl because of the special lighting Vermeer makes use of.

In fact, not even the model Vermer used for the pearl was a real pearl, but a glass ball covered in varnish. Art historians came to that conclusion because pearls of that size didn’t grow in the Netherlands, and it was a fashion trend at the time to wear fake pearl earrings.

The tour guide also showcased the masterpiece “The Bull” (1647) by Paulus Potter, which was one of my favorite paintings. He explained that Potter usually tried to be very detailed and realistic in his art, by adding small details, such as the frog in the foreground of “The Bull”. However, in this painting Potter made a mistake. The Bull, which is the centerpiece of the painting, has a disproportionately small head. This is due to Potter’s perfectionism. Since he could not find a single bull that was worthy of being starred in his painting, he decided to create a bull, by pasting together different bull parts. However he made the mistake of choosing a calf’s head, which did not match the body of a full-grown bull. The tour guide also mentioned that the painting had been stolen by the French during the time of Napoleon, due to Napoleon’s great interest in art. After Napoleon was defeated, the Louvre was initially unwilling to return the painting because the staff had become so attached to it. However, the Netherlands joined forces with England and Germany, whose paintings had also been stolen by the French, and the painting was ultimately recovered by force.

The tour guide also presented one of Rembrandt’s early paintings, « The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolas Tulp » (1633), which marked the beginning of his fame. Rembrandt had received a commission to paint a group portrait of the newly appointed chief of medicine and his team. This assignment was a great honor, especially since it was typically reserved for the most renowned painters (Rembrandt had not gained fame yet at that time). Rembrandt aimed to capture Dr. Nicolas Tulp and his team in action, wanting to create an original painting instead of the conventional group portrait where everyone stood in line and looked serious. The tour guide directed our attention to the corpse that the medical team was studying, which led us to notice that the proportions seemed off. The arms and legs of the dead body seemed too short. The tour guide further explained that the man’s hands had been amputated as a punishment for his crimes. Consequently, Rembrandt had to paint the hands without actually observing them, which explains why they seem too short. As for the legs, Rembrandt intentionally depicted them as shorter. He knew  that viewers typically started examining paintings from the bottom right corner. Therefore he painted the legs in a way that they seemed the perfect length when looking at the painting from that angle, although they seemed disproportionate from other perspectives. The tour guide also mentioned that the open arm showcased in the painting was anatomically inaccurate. Rembrandt chose to paint the arm in a less realistic manner, prioritizing aesthetics.

Finally the tour guide drew our attention to the hat-like shadows surrounding two of the members of the chief of medicine’s team. They were originally wearing hats, but the chief of medicine requested Rembrandt to remove the hats, since he wanted to be the only person wearing a hat in the painting.

A big thank you to the tour guide, who presented and explained a well-chosen selection of magnificent Dutch masterpieces and to Mrs. Köwenig, Mrs. Roig, and Mr. Reppert for having organized this tour (and the wonderful trip)! The three paintings that I described above were my favorites and I brought postcards of them home. I can only recommend visiting the Mauritshuis museum to appreciate these wonderful paintings in person.

During my school trip to The Hague, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Visitor Center of the Peace Palace, where I gained a deeper understanding of the functioning of these esteemed institutions. As I entered the center, I was immediately captivated by the aura of tranquility and international cooperation that permeated the surroundings. The Visitor Center provided a comprehensive overview of the Peace Palace’s role in promoting peace and resolving disputes. I learned about the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where judges from various countries come together to settle legal disputes between nations. The Court’s commitment to upholding international law left me in awe of the power of diplomacy and justice. Furthermore, I marveled at the majestic architecture of the Peace Palace. The grandeur of these buildings reflected the significance of the work carried out within their walls. Standing before them, I felt a sense of respect for the international community’s collective effort to foster global harmony and accountability. My visit to The Hague was truly a memorable experience. It broadened my perspective on global affairs, showcasing the critical role that institutions like the PCA and the ICJ play in shaping our world. I left with a newfound appreciation for the power of dialogue, cooperation, and the pursuit of justice in creating a more peaceful and just society.

The Hague was a very beautiful trip, where you learned a lot about the culture and also had a deeper bond with your classmates.

I had my group with 6 friends, where we were 3 boys in a room. In my opinion, it is very different to have that routine of waking up together, getting ready together, going to sleep together. It is something wonderful to get to know your friends in a different way and to see how they live. I missed this routine a lot after the trip.

Also one of my highlights was the Zeehelden festival. This last moment where we stayed longer than planned because we were all together and felt the music and danced together. The atmosphere we created was stunning and I think it also made us a lot closer as a group.

On the whole I liked this trip, also because I was new in this year and had time to get to know the people a bit better.

However, I would like to criticize one point on the trip, because it was too expensive. Some people don’t have the possibility to afford it for various reasons and it’s a shame that these people don’t get the chance to experience it. I find it sad and hope someone finds a solution to make it possible to everyone.

Nevertheless, it was a nice farewell for the 11th class, and we can now strive for the Abitur. A big thank you to the teachers who made this possible, with whom we have done great activities and have also built a stronger relationship.

The return journey

The day we went back to Sarrebruck started like any other day we had spent in Amsterdam. After getting out of bed around 8:20a.m and having breakfast until around 8:50a.m , we packed our suitcases and went to the reception to check out. In front of the hotel, we took a group photo, in which everyone is more or less well recognizable, and made our way to the train.

After we were ready to leave, we went downstairs in front of the hotel at 9.30 am to gather everyone together again and to have enough time to be totally relaxed. After that we went to the train station nearby and got on the train at 10.20 am to the airport Schiphol. The journey to the first change was quite unpleasant as the train was quite full and some had to stand or sit on the floor. It wasn’t too bad as this first part of the return journey didn’t last long. If this train journey had been longer, however, the lack of space could have been problematic as you couldn’t really do anything because you were constantly busy holding on to something to stay on your feet. It was still quite early, which had good effects on the one hand, but also bad ones on the other. It was good because you were quite relaxed as we were all still a bit sleepy. On the other hand, there was a lot going on, which was probably due to the early rush hour. I and the others were all a little depressed that the class trip was over, but also happy to finally be home again. So, you can say that the mood during this small section was quite variable and inconstant.

Then, we took the train to arrive in Bruxelles, and a third one in the direction of Luxembourg. Finally, as last part of our travel, we took a bus.
The bus we have taken from Luxembourg to Sarrebruck was a double decker bus, but the second floor was half witted, so we couldn’t stay and we hit our head several times. All the people were listening to music, and we were all tired of the travel.

Amsterdam. The Netherlands. Quite different to France and Germany, especially when you cross the street, with all these (brakeless!) bikes. It has been amazing to visit this wonderful city. Even if most of its citizens where speaking Dutch, we all got a great impression, and it’s all these differences that made the trip that exceptional. We’ve learned more about the history of Amsterdam, could visit some interesting museums, see the self portrait of Vincent Van Gogh in the Rijksmuseum, spend some time in the natural parcs of the city. Moreover, we could visit as much the new Amsterdam as the old Amsterdam, thanks three tourist guides. A complete trip, with enough free time to visit Amsterdam in our own way too! See you soon again, Amsterdam!

Le PEL est organisé par Let’s promote Europe (LPE), association crée par d’anciens élèves de notre lycée (promotion 2019) en coopération avec le Parlement européen à Strasbourg.

Le PEL est un projet qui réunit des lycéens de toute l’Europe et les incite à s’interroger sur l’avenir de l’Union européenne, à débattre de thèmes de coopération internationale et à proposer des solutions aux défis européens. Cette expérience unique, riche en apprentissages et échanges humains permet aux jeunes d’être plongés dans le fonctionnement la vie démocratique européenne et de s’engager dans des débats en échangeant avec des jeunes de leur âge issus d’univers variés. Cette année, le projet comptait plus de 450 élèves, venant de 11 pays avec plus de 50 nationalités différentes. Après une phase de préparation de cinq mois, nos apprentis députés ont lors d’une simulation du processus législatif européen dans les locaux du Parlement européen de Strasbourg débattu et rédigé des amendements sur les thèmes suivants : promotion de la neutralité climatique par des moyens de transport durables, protection de l’indépendance et du pluralisme des médias, gestion de crises au niveau européen et politique européenne de défense.

En deuxième partie de programme notre école représentait l‘Italie lors d’une simulation du Conseil de l’Union européenne sur le thème des chaînes d’approvisionnement. Des activités culturelles ont fortement contribué à une ambiance conviviale et amicale.

L’ensemble des travaux s’est déroulé en allemand, anglais et français.

Enfin ce projet n’aurait pas pu voir le jour sans le soutien financier d’Erasmus que nous remercions vivement.

Le Parlement Européen des lycéens m’a donné de nouvelles perspectives pour le futur et nous a laissé vivre la vie d’un vrai député au sein de l’Union Européenne. La simulation très réaliste des processus législatifs de l’UE a fait du PEL un projet unique et très intéressant. Il est à recommander !

Ce fût une expérience riche qui nous a permis de découvrir le quotidien d’un député européen, le système législatif de l’UE et plus généralement, de s’initier à la vie politique de manière immersive. J’ai beaucoup apprécié cette “expérience” pour plusieurs raisons en particulier pour le fait de devoir /pouvoir s’exprimer en plusieurs langues. Cela m’a permis de rencontrer de Nouvelles personnes venants de toute l’Europe. C’était vraiment super (même si cela demande un minimum d’investissement)

Cherine:

Le PEL m’a permis d’avoir une ouverture d’esprit plus grande. J’ai pu faire énormément de rencontres avec des élèves de différents pays voire de continents. Découvrir le monde de la politique m’a permis de comprendre le processus législatif. Cela montre que nous devons nous investir en tant que citoyen afin de choisir les lois que nous jugeons les plus justes. Grâce à l’union que j’ai vécue pendant ces trois jours, j’ai pris conscience de la force et de la diversité de l’UE.

Das Parlement européen des lycéens ist eine einzigartige Gelegenheit um Einblicke in die Europäische Union zu erhalten und dir demokratische Gesetzgebungsprozesse kennenzulernen. Sowohl neue Blickwinkel und Sichtweisen als auch der Austausch mit anderen politikinteressierte Jungendlichen aus Europa waren dabei besonders interessant

Nicolas :

Le PEL m’a appris la pratique de l’écriture normalisée des textes de lois, à défendre mes positions et avis en argumentant concrètement devant des centaines de personnes avec une éloquence claire et précise, à faire des discours qui représentent l’avis d’un groupe ou le miens, et enfin à gérer une équipe de personnes variées et issues de toute l’Europe en s’appuyant sur leurs compétences individuelles. Mais surtout ce projet m’a permis de découvrir des personnes incroyables car c’est au final une expérience humaine plutôt que législative, tout comme l’Union européenne.

Sarah :

Ich bin sehr dankbar für diese Erfahrung, denn nicht nur der Einblick hinter die Kulissen des Parlaments, sondern auch das Kennenlernen neuer Jugendlicher aus ganz Europa, hat mich bereichert. Dieses Projekt ist sehr empfehlenswert und wenn ich könnte, würde ich eventuell selber nochmal teilnehmen!

Elsa:

Grâce au projet du Parlement européen des lycéens, j’ai appris à connaitre des lycéens venant de plusieurs pays. J’ai pu également découvrir le métier de député européen. Je ne retiens que du positif de cette expérience et je conseille aux jeunes intéressés par la politique de participer à ce projet.

Our project revolves around migration in Europe and we tackled some issues related to it through group activities that led the students to reflect on integration and the mixing of different cultures and backgrounds. As usual, all the activities and exchanges were carried out in English, a great way for our students to display their excellent skills.

On top of the activities, there were various visits that enabled us all to reflect on our topic, among which a workshop at the Migration Museum and a visit to the Parlamentarium.

But what makes the Erasmus projects so special are always the meetings of young Europeans, the discovery of new people and cultures, and this mobility was just as successful as the previous ones, if we go by what the students had to say about it at the end.

Here is some students’ feedback about their experience :

The people we met there are amazing. Erasmus brings so many different cultures together to see that we are no different from one another. There is a special bond created between the different nationalities, a bond that goes beyond borders, that no other school trip can provide.

Being in a hostel with people from different nationalities made us so much closer than a regular school trip and/or Erasmus experience, we really lived with one another and that’s how you truly get to know people. I have never developed relationships with people as fast on any other trip.

It’s a bittersweet feeling to watch all the pretty relationships and discussions you had with those new friends fade and go back to their country. Moreover Erasmus is a wonderful experience to bring us all together and create a strong European unity that is useful for the future of the EU. It’s a great linguistic exchange as well that made us improve our English skills.

Finn, TS1

Erasmus brings so many kind souls together, allowing all of us to create beautiful memories and meaningful friendships that mostly last longer than the project. Exploring each other’s cultures just feels natural and allows us to open our minds and develop new, different interests.

This experience was really special because we had a lot more time to spend with each other and it was really easy to organize things all together. It allows us to really discover the others and it was AWESOME how different relationships have been created. If you hadn’t had the time to talk with someone one evening we could try to socialize during the breakfast or even in the elevator (that we had to wait for so so long). It also brings us to make compromises for a common good.

Cette semaine a été riche en activités organisées par le lycée afin d’apprendre à nous connaitre et partager nos quotidiens, nos diversités mais surtout nos ressemblances. Par ailleurs nous avons également pu visiter deux musées prestigieux, celui de Guernica pour ne pas oublier le passé et celui de Guggenheim pour nous tourner vers l’avenir.

Nous souhaitons à toutes et tous les élèves de notre lycée de pouvoir vivre une expérience européenne aussi motivante !

Il est toujours impressionnant de voir tout ce que les élèves du LFA savent faire. Ils l’ont démontré une nouvelle fois lors de la « Journée européenne des langues étrangères », célébrée le 26 septembre dans les classes de collège sous la forme de nombreux exposés et projets.

Cette journée d’action est une initiative du Conseil de l’Europe ; elle vise à promouvoir le plurilinguisme en Europe et à célébrer la diversité des langues et des cultures. On peut certes constater tous les jours dans les couloirs et la cour de l’école que l’on parle plus que le français et l’allemand au LFA, mais c’est tout de même quelque chose de particulier de faire plus ample connaissance avec l’une de ces langues.

Les particularités d’un pays ou d’une langue ont été présentées sous forme de Power Point, de cours de langue, de vidéos, de quiz et d’affiches. Parfois même, des grands-parents ou d’autres membres de la famille sont venus en classe pour répondre aux questions des élèves. Qu’il s’agisse de chansons traditionnelles du Cameroun, de chocolats de Belgique, de premières tentatives d’écriture en arabe ou de faits curieux sur l’Italie, ce jour-là, les enseignants ont eux aussi appris des choses!

Et c’est dans ces moments-là que l’école devient particulièrement amusante !

En 6e1, la journée des langues a été l’occasion de découvrir la Roumanie, le Kosovo et les pays arabophones (dont l’Algérie) et d’apprendre à se saluer, à se dire au revoir et à demander comment on va en roumain, en goran, en arabe littéraire et en arabe d’Algérie. Merci à Miruna, Binel, Enes et Houdeyfa pour leurs exposés passionnants et leurs cours de langue menés d’une main de maître !

Sacha is an Austrian student from the Akademisches Gymnasium in Vienna and Cristina is a Spanish student from the Lycée Zola de Las Rozas in Madrid.

Thanks to an Erasmus grant, Jules and Sarah will also travel to the partner schools for several weeks to improve their language skills and to experience life with Austrian and Spanish families.

We hope that these pioneers will inspire other students to embark on this unforgettable life experience.

This second Erasmus exchange of our project « The Soil under my Feet » lived up to its promise and everyone came back with a lot of memories after having experienced the warm welcome of the Greek families and teachers.

Next stop, Madrid.

The students met their exchange partners for the first time. They had city experiences and learned many things (photography workshop, history of Gouda, urban transformation, etc.), which made them enthusiastic!

The teachers and students thank the Dutch partners again for their warm welcome.

Deux de nos projets qui étaient en attente ont enfin pu trouver un nouvel élan et dès novembre, nous pourrons recevoir les professeurs de Croatie, d’Espagne, d’Italie et de Grèce afin d’apporter les derniers ajustements aux activités.

Le projet « The Soil under my Feet » permettra aux élèves concernés de premières et secondes de considérer la question de l’immigration en Europe.

L’autre projet européen international co-financé par Erasmus+ est un échange bilatéral avec notre lycée partenaire de Gouda aux Pays-Bas sur le thème de l’évolution de la ville.

Grâce à l’accréditation Erasmus+ du lycée franco-allemand, nos projets ont pu prendre de l’ampleur.

Plus flexible, plus large dans ses applications, notre accréditation nous permet de désormais supporter des activités qui n’étaient auparavant pas couvertes par le programme Erasmus+.

A titre d’exemples, nous pouvons désormais contribuer financièrement à :

• de la formation professionnelle où les personnels pourront découvrir ce qui se fait ailleurs en Europe en matière d’éducation.
• des échanges individuels d’élèves en Europe.
• l’échange avec Bilbao.
• le Parlement européen des lycéens.
• un nouveau projet axé sur la technologie en collaboration avec notre partenaire madrilène où les élèves s’initieront à la programmation de robots.

Le maître mot d’Erasmus+ est la mobilité et la rencontre au sein de l’Europe et nous espérons qu’élèves et professeurs seront conquis par ces nouvelles opportunités qui s’offrent à eux.

The main aim of this meeting was to reflect upon dos and don’ts on the Internet and to encourage a safe behaviour online.

To shed some legal light on the intricate issues of fake news and hate speech, we worked in collaboration with the Europa Institut of the law department of the university in Saarbrücken.

Pupils also answered polls to try and define the way they behave and present themselves on the web.

To wrap up this week, they produced tri-fold brochures to raise awareness and promote safe behaviour on the Internet.

Of course, this Erasmus mobility was also the opportunity to discover what France and Germany have the best to offer at this time of year, and particularly Christmas markets on both sides of the border in Trier and Strasburg.

We were also fortunate to visit the European parliament and witnessed some of the Members of the European Parliament interventions on the day parliament confirmed the new European commission.

And of course, an Erasmus meeting would not be an Erasmus meeting without a farewell party to conclude this eventful week with pizzas and music.
