Visitors were able to experience first-hand just how diverse, creative and forward-looking the skilled trades can be at this year’s Skilled Trades Day on Saarbrücken’s Schlossplatz. On 17 September 2026, the Saarland Chamber of Crafts, guilds, associations and numerous businesses showcased the full spectrum of craft trades.
The event offered exciting insights into the world of work, particularly for school pupils: at various stations, they were able to get hands-on, try out craft activities and talk to apprentices, skilled workers and business representatives. Around 30 exhibitors demonstrated just how varied the paths into the skilled trades can be – from electronics and metalwork to carpentry and painting, right through to hairdressing.
Our school was also actively represented at the event. Gabriel Weinberg and Arthur Fritz from Year 11 were among the invited guests. Arthur even took part in the panel discussion ‘Skilled trades and School’, where he shared the perspectives and experiences of pupils. This highlighted just how important direct dialogue between schools and the world of work is for young people’s career guidance. Arthur was able to draw on the experience he had already gained through the Osthafen project and two taster days at the Chamber of Skilled Trades.
Crafts Day thus not only sparked an interest in trying things out, but also demonstrated that school education involves finding out about the wide range of opportunities open to pupils after they have completed their A-levels.
